The Homefront Podcast

The Sacrifice, Discipline and Commitment it Takes to Succeed

May 19, 2023

My friends, Welcome back to the Homefront podcast! Today is the very last episode of season 3 and it couldn’t be a better topic, for what I am going through during this time. We will be chatting about the Sacrifices, Discipline and Commitment it takes to achieve what you want. To be able to live the life you want to live.

I'm toree!

I’m a forever student to mom-ing and business, an optimistic solution finder, a passionate do-er, an adventurous foodie, a wine not-so aficionado, a local coffee shop trespasser, experience and real estate junkie, and a wannabe globe trotter, just curious about hearing more stories from strangers.

hello,

My friends, Welcome back to the Homefront podcast! Today is the very last episode of season 3 and it couldn’t be a better topic, for what I am going through during this time. We will be chatting about the Sacrifices, Discipline and Commitment it takes to achieve what you want. To be able to live the life you want to live.

These three things are the biggest difference makers in my business and life and what I have been working on in my business. Boy oh boy is it Freaking HARD! So, let’s dive in and get personal about this.

First Let’s Chat About Sacrifice

One thing I’ve learned is that sacrifice is essential to success.  EVERYONE today is sacrificing something in some way. There is a cost to everything in life. As I am recording this episode, I am out of state over seven hours of travel, away from my family while I handle some work projects. This is a HUGE sacrifice for me to leave the Homefront and it was a tough decision to make, but I am here for multiple reasons and I want to share that with you. One, I am at a real estate conference, meeting with my team all over the states, learning how to better provide for my growing team, while also connecting with leaders in the industry and learning where things are going within the industry. I cannot be a great leader without plugging in and staying connected and continuing to learn. This seems a little silly but I think of it like a map and weather forecast as If i were a Captain of a ship…without it how will I know where and how to best steer the ship? I can’t…so it is my job to ensure that I am able to steer the ship safely and most efficiently, and my team and family count on me to do so.

Secondly, I am here to take my quarterly review on where I am at in business and life. Sit back, reassess my goals, set new deadlines and work on my larger projects whether alone by the pool, at lunch or in the hotel room. Sometimes it can take me a bit to get into the zone and focus on larger projects, so this is a good time to work on those things. The third reason I sacrificed time away from my family is because my coach is challenging me to get more solo time in for myself…to recalibrate and recharge so I can be the best mom, wife and leader I can be. You see, I used to think the opposite. That it is more important to sacrifice solo time than time with kids, husband, friends, or work. Truth is, I still do sacrifice alone time NEARLY EVERY SINGLE DAY, but safely about 350 days a year!

My husband and Homefront is sacrificing temporarily so that we can take the next step forward. I think the hardest part of this whole thing is that each decision I make is MINE to choose, which is freedom but also, I have to pick and choose and be accountable for what I choose to sacrifice. It’s not really different with anyone else I know, but with freedom comes responsibility! I can’t just say “Oh, my boss needs me here!” or “My contract states I HAVE to travel to get my job done”. There’s no one to point a finger at but myself. Which is amazing, that I have gotten to this point, but definitely doesn’t relive the pressure. It’s so easy to say “Nah!”.

Also, usually these events I like to bring my family along for the ride, do a side vacation out of it, and we had thoughts of going to Disney during this trip. However, we would then be sacrificing our kids schedules, sports and end of year school commitments. And, our wallets when my husband and I have other goals with our finances. We have so many other trips on the calendar ahead that we realized the sacrifice in having everyone come far outweighed the sacrifice to stay home.  You see, you can do it all…just not at the same time all the time! There’s sacrifice in almost every decision we make. I am learning to be comfortable with making these sacrifices, but the fact that I am explaining it means there’s still a tad bit of guilt in the background that I am working on. So if you are like me and feeling that same thing, just know, I am choosing to do it anyway. I am sacrificing anyway…to get to where we want to go…to accomplish our family goals. The good news is, we pulled my husband out from his job so that we would feel better about these kinds of sacrifices.

Sacrifice is Temporary

Everything is…so we have to be careful not to shift the sacrifices to a point where we feel regret. Regret we aren’t there for our kids as much as we want to be, or regret that we didn’t go and get better at the skills that will help us grow. I will say, the more I sacrifice the more I learn about myself also! This right here my friends is the balancing act!  If I have trouble deciding what to sacrifice, I always turn to my husband and our core values.

3 Things I am Sacrificing this Summer

  1. Taking the summer off of the podcast to focus on summer with family.
  2. Sacrificing a (safer) Higher Income by reinvesting back into my businesses and hiring more help, for my Real Estate Team, The podcast and the Sprint Club! (this should and will come back ten times!)
  3. Sacrificing more relationships by saying “no” to negative attitudes and things that I would have normally said yes to but now just don’t fit on our priorities list or help build the life we want.
  4. Sacrificing our daily spending to allocate funds to more assets my husband and I want to buy.
  5. Sacrificing some of my late nights with wine to get better sleep.

These are just some of the little sacrifices that slowly turn into better habits.

Let’s Dive into Discipline!

Along with sacrifice, discipline is crucial. Discipline refers to the ability to control oneself and stick to a routine or plan to achieve a goal. It involves setting goals, creating plans to achieve those goals, and adhering to them even when it’s challenging.  Discipline is what makes you follow through with your sacrifice and make it all worth it. Without discipline, your sacrifice goes to waste.

For instance, if I sacrifice time away from family to spend money and days away to get work done – I BETTER BE DISCIPLINED to get that work done, and DO WHAT I CAME TO DO. I could spend all day at the spa and spend late nights watching Netflix or lounge by the pool the entire time. But, then my time away was partially wasted. Same thing with business, If I hire people to replace me or just to work in my business, I better be disciplined to train them properly and take time to focus on the work that I need to do to keep that train moving, otherwise – it’s a waste. If I sacrifice my late nights to get better sleep and workouts in, but I am not disciplined with my nutrition and I eat like crap and drink wine every night then it feels like a waste. I’m going to start off with saying as a MOM, I feel super disciplined with our kids, our routines, rules, accountability and expectations.

Our systems are SOLID…and it’s much easier for me to stay disciplined with it because it’s naturally what matters most to me. It’s high on the priority list. I also feel there is a very short window in time where that discipline matters the most…and we’ve tripled down on that since we’ve only got one shot at parenting. Businesses come and go, but Parenting is once in a lifetime – so it’s where my heart lies and it’s much easier to stay disciplined there. Even with the tasks that I don’t want to do, the motherhood kicks in and makes it easier for me.

What’s hard to stay disciplined in are the tasks and things that aren’t natural to me, and that give me delayed gratification. Like staying disciplined to learn and get good at a new task, or staying disciplined to post the videos I don’t want to post in order to keep business alive, or discipline to go to sleep when I want to stay up chatting all night, or to make a healthy choice at a happy hour with friends or hubby. The truth is, discipline is BORING to me. Because I LOVE change and adventure. So doing the same workouts, routines, diet, work — it’s monotonous and boring. I’ve had to change my mindset around this to think that I am sacrificing some fun to have more fun later! SO hard to do when you want to have fun every day! I’ll give you a little example about something so tiny but so big for me that I am working on with discipline.

For those of you who know me, you know I looove my iced coffees, or even coffee in general. It’s not the coffee itself but its what it resembles for me. Theres something about gathering or meeting with someone new or old , over coffee or bringing my friends, clients or co-workers coffee’s randomly – as a sign of gratitude or a fun simple gesture that is a feel good for me and many I know. It’s the simple pleasure! It’s true friendship when you have friends that can say “I got this one! You get the next!” , whatever that feeling is. It’s really cheesy and I am going to say it, but that feeling is LOVE. Or like a HUG IN A CUP –  And my friends,  I will never give this up! It just makes everything better. Anyway, what I am getting at is although I will never give this up, I know I need to stay disciplined in investing in assets to hit our goals, and since discipline seems a little boring at times I attach it to a fun habit.

Like, every time I spend $10 at coffee today – I am going to match or double that amount and put $20 into into our investment fund. If I decide to change my mind from buying that coffee, I am going to match and fund but also add the amount I would of spent on coffee and throw that cup of love right into my investment fund totaling $30 instead of $20. This is just a simple habit. Another habit I have and love is snacking and eating out  – so I attach a boring discipline like getting sufficient protein to my snack and try to shoot for 20 grams of protein at each snack. SO yes, I can snack – but I need to shoot for 20 grams of protein with my snack or food choice. I want to get back into running, but getting back on the horse sucks, so I asked my 9 year old if he wanted to run a race with me, and now we will do it together!

The Sprint Club!

This is our weekly meetup to work one hour on the things that we’ve been procrastinating on in our business. Fine, I will dedicate an hour of my time to get shit done that I don’t really want to do but I need to do to grow – but, I am going to attach it to something fun, like invite others who feel the same way that want to grow together , in the same room and work on the task side by side so that I can grow with other like minded people. I am going to build a community at the same time!

Also – If I  am going to be away from my kids and husband for work, at least there’s a spa, pools and palm trees, room service! I can lounge by the pool if I can get “x,y,z” done.

Now, I cannot do this with everything but doing it for the little things has helped me practice more and more at getting disciplined and making it fun. I am basically giving myself and instant reward (or feeling of love) with everything I have a hard time staying disciplined at. Discipline is where the magic happens. But, it’s a muscle that needs to be worked, and it’s doing something when you don’t want to do it. Just because you SAID YOU WOULD.

This Goes Right into COMMITMENT

Commitment refers to the level of dedication and loyalty to a goal or cause. It involves putting in effort and persevering, even when faced with obstacles or setbacks. For example, committing to a long-term goal despite experiencing setbacks or difficulties along the way.

While they are distinct concepts, commitment often goes hand in hand with sacrifice and discipline. To achieve a goal, it often requires sacrificing time, money, or other resources, and sticking to a disciplined routine to make progress. Ultimately, it is the commitment to the goal that drives the sacrifices and discipline needed to achieve it.

Because I am committed to the goals my husband and I have, I made the sacrifice to leave him home to handle all of our minions and hectic schedules, to come to work and discipline myself to get what I need to get accomplished while here. Before I officially booked this trip and I was debating-  my husband said these words “ Don’t let me or the kids be your EXCUSE, to not do what you need to do”. Argh. That hit home. We are HUGE on excuses and being held accountable in our household so “ouch!” that hurt. We are a team and we are sacrificing together and he was holding me accountable to our commitments we made to ourselves. It’s really that simple. Dreams are just dreams without commitments.

It helps to have someone committed with you, and on the same page, rowing in the same direction – so for that, I am grateful!

Long story short, this is me wrapping up season 3 of the Homefront podcast.

I hope my story has inspired you to pursue your goals with sacrifices, discipline and commitment. Remember, success does not come easy and it can only be defined by you! With hard work and dedication anything is possible.

As I mentioned earlier, I timed this perfectly to go along with my kids summer schedule as well as getting the Sprint Club up and running! WE Have officially launched the Sprint club!
